Thai history is a little vague. Approximately 3500 BC a civilisation existed in the northern part. Mon Buddhist communities came south from Burma in the 6-8th century and settled in the Bangkok area. In 1238 Thais settled down in the Khmer ruled city of Sukhothai. In 1296 Ching Mai was founded. 1351 was the foundation of the Ayutthaya kingdom, which reigned until the 17th century. Europeans which settled down over the years, were expelled by the end of the 17th century and Thailand remained fairly isolated. Wars with Burma and Cambodia were raging which led to the foundation of Thonburi as the new capital for the Ayutthaya kings. 1782 Bangkok was founded and Ayutthaya king Chakri proclaimed himself Rama I and Bangkok got the additional name of Krung Thep (city of angels) until today. The Rama Dynasty lasted until today. Thailand has basically never been colonized like most other South East Asian Countries except during the WW II by Japanese. Foreigners did return after the 1830's to develop the country. Thai's are mainly a mix of most surrounding countries. In addition you'll find people of Chinese, Indian and Arabic ethnic origins. Thai's carry mostly Thai names. Thai is the national language. English is spoken in the major cities, but mainly in business and tourism. |

Most major cities have airports and are connected to Bangkok. An extensive
train network by SRT makes the travelling over land quite comfortable as well. Many have eating facilities and service at your seat. Sleeping carriages are available as well. Bus services are plenty available and so are accidents. Many of them are air conditioned. |

Bangkok is Thailand's capital and the
residence of the King. With approximate 10 million inhabitants, it's one
of Asia's most bustling cities. The most modern skyscrapers mix with
numerous old fashioned shop houses. It's as well the city
of klongs (canals) and wats (temples). |

Phuket
once a trading post in
the 16th century and fishing villages around the island, is today one of
the worlds favorite beach and diving destination. 4 million people visit
this beautiful island every year. You will find the busy Patong beach as
well as various quiet beach areas with only one hotel and crystal
blue waters. |
 |
Koh Samui is much smaller in size as
well as activities. It's a popular destination for families with
children. In the last five years some five star hotels have settled down
in Koh Samui as well. |

Ching
Mai located in the north of Thailand offers a very different Thailand. Visit
the hill
tribes, ride elephants, and get wet riding on bamboo rafts. |

The variety of Thai food is tremendous and the influence from the neighbouring countries can be seen and tasted everywhere. Fresh ingredients are a must. Wok cooking guarantees that food wont be overcooked.
Most dishes contain vegetables, fruits and a range of local spices.
Thailand is famous for its seafood. Due to it’s two long coastlines along the southern peninsula, on the Gulf of Thailand and on the Indian Ocean, fishing boats bring in crabs, fish, rock lobsters, giant prawns, scallops, shrimps and squids. All these are often simply steamed, grilled or prepared in various curries.
Thai food is normally associated with ,chili. Many restaurants however will be happy to use less if you so wish. Following this advise you should try some of the typical Thai dishes, such as thom yam gung a lemon grass flavored (sourish) seafood soup, |

Thailand brews a range of beers, Singha, Singha Gold, Amarit NB, Kloster,
Beer Chang and Heineken. You should as well try the various fruit juices,
especially the tropical one. I.e. Guava contains more vitamins than any
other fruit and taste delicious. You'll find juice and fruit vendors
along the streets. |

Thailand is a very
traditional country and in many ways very conservative. However the big gap
in income makes it it for the lower end very difficult to make a decent
living. Most major towns will have some type of red light districts with all
it's activities. The girls involved come in most cases from other cities
than the one you find them in. Bangkok girls go to Phuket and Pattaya,
Phuket girls go to Bangkok. Treat them nice they don't do this for fun, it's
an survival issue. When they go back to their hometown they are "normal"
girls. |

|

easy. AIR, most major cities have airports and are connected to Bangkok.
The largest carrier is Thai Airways. Bangkok Airways flies to Koh Samui and
Singapore. Air Andaman flies to Phuket and to some of the smaller destinations.
TRAIN, an extensive
train network by SRT
makes the traveling over land quite comfortable as well. Many have eating facilities and service at your seat. Sleeping carriages are available as well.
ROAD, Bus services are plenty available and it's cheap.
Many of them are air conditioned. CAR RENTAL, most major
companies are around. BUT
to drive in
Thailand needs skilled drivers as accidents are quite common as

SHOPPING |
|
Shopping in Thailand offers the typical bargaining atmosphere. Reputable shops are more expensive, but give you the “certainty” of being less cheated. Remember, you will always find it cheaper somewhere else. Make up your mind and stop comparing afterwards. Look out for:
Gems from reputable dealers only.
Silverware especially as fashion items are very affordable
Antiques are excellent buys. You find an export ban on certain items or an export license. Reputable dealer will be able to advise you on the restrictions and necessary documentation needed.
Ceramics,
and Lacquer ware are popular decorative items.
Flower lovers wouldn’t miss the Thai Orchids. The variety is huge and you should by them for their freshness at Bangkok International Airport befor you leave.
Thai Silk, do we have to say more? |
