Shanghai's 1.000 years history has been a very colorful one. Shanghai means by the sea. In the 19th century it became like the Paris of the east. Opium wars, trade metropolis and Shanghai is considered the birthplace of the Communist Party in 1921. Today it is trying to challenge Hong Kong with fairly good success. You can hardly believe it is located in China.

 

There are few temples in the city area of Shanghai. The Jade Buddha Temple is famous do to its grandiose almost white Jade Buddha made from one single piece of jade in Burma and brought to China in the 1880th.
Go on top of the 465m high Oriental Pearl TV Tower for a magnificent view of this great city.
The Bund along the Huangpu river should definitely be in your sight seeing schedule. It was and partly still is the heart of Shanghai.
The first Chinese Communist Congress (12 people) took place in this renovated building in 1921. This was the beginning of the Chinese Communist Party. The building is located in the today famous Xin Tian Di Entertainment area.
Nanjing Donglu the most famous shopping street in Shanghai, stretching from the Bund up to the Peoples Park area. What you cant find here doesn't exist in Shanghai. Look for old bookstores, Chinese Art shops and to make a break have a cup of Chinese tea.
Suzhou, 1 hour drive away has architecture from the Ming dynasty, Tiger Hill and Pagoda, Han Shan Temple, Fishing Masters Garden a fantastic memory of past time splendour and the famous silk factories.
Hangzhou's West Lake is a famous tourist attraction . see as well Hua Gang Park, Ling Yin temple and Dragon well Tea Village.

There are plenty of shopping Centers in Shanghai offering anything and everything you can imaging.

Nanjing Donglu the most famous shopping street in Shanghai, stretching from the Bund up to the Peoples Park area.

In the heart of Shanghai you can still find the old fashioned shops to get your groceries and household items. This one is round the corner of Xin Tian Di.
