Beautiful landscape, fantastic nature, lovely beaches, a modern city and laid back. It seems as if only the Asian population is working. People are friendly but rough at the same time.

AIR, international flights go to major Asian airports (Terminal 1) only. Domestic flights  (Terminal 2) brings you most Australian destinations. TRAIN, the Great Southern railway connects Perth with Adelaide and Sydney and several stops in between. ROAD, there are roads but be aware that the distance makes it not worthwhile to travel coast to coast. Fly and rent a car, the rates are cheap.

Australia has a 40.000 year Aboriginal history. The Australian Aboriginals where more or less the only people until the Portuguese and Dutch arrived in the 15th and 16th century. Western Australia got it's first western settlements in 1826 by the English. It was not a penal colony as many others. However Fremantle prison is somehow an old prison monument from those days. Western Australia started booming when the first gold was found and is today a strong economical state due to the mining industry.

Partly due to it's young history there is not much to see in the cities. The beauty lies in it's partly unusual nature with it's unique flora and fauna. Endless beaches with blue skies and blue waters makes it a prime destination for lovers of water sports and the beautiful marine life.

There are various ways to visit Perth. One are the free of charge CAT busses which takes you to most places. another option are the tram like busses which drive you you to all tourist attractions. You can get various types of passes. Check with them for the options.
The PERTH Mint was founded in 1896 and was an important milestone in the development of Western Australia. mining is the driving economical power in Western Australia.
Fremantle, famous for its prison, is the port city of Western Australia. The prison is no longer used, but you can do a guided tour through the grueling history of this infamous place. A pleasant way to travel there is by the regular cruise ships.
Join a tour to the pinnacle dessert north of PERTH. Make a fascinating day of spectacular natural contrasts. Big sky plains, koalas and kangaroos, massive sand dunes and emerald waters lapping pristine white sandy beaches. Ride Desert Storm Adventure - a monster 4WD bus purpose built for the Lancelin sand dunes. >>  more

Join one of Perth's most entertaining day tours!  Enjoy morning tea soon after you board, followed by tasting of our premium 'Wines of the Month' from local West Australian vineyards. Visit two of WA's most prestigious and best known wineries, Houghton and Sandalford. The restaurant at Waters Edge Winery will serve a three course lunch. >> more

Mhm, what to say. The best ingredients on earth, but basic cooking skills. A lot of barbecue, grilling and pasta served in huge portions. You'll find plenty of sandwich bars and fast food outlets. Northbridge is supposed to be the place where to eat and drink, but beware it's more a typical tourist area with tourist prices. It was funny to notice that in many places the dishes are the same as if they come from a large kitchen somewhere and get reheated in the restaurant you visit. Don't expect to much service as it means work.

Wine and beer are the main beverages with food and after hour. The Perth region has some quite a few  vineyards producing very good wines. The main grapes are Shiraz, Sauvignon and Cabernet. beers in pubs from the tab are very often light. Other come bottled and cost more. bars are open weekdays until 1 am officially but most bars have the tendency to close 10.30 pm onwards.

The nightlife is modest. Northbridge is the centre of activities. bars in other areas have a tendency to close earlier than the law demands as people "want to go home" instead of working. many of the locals can't hold their drink. Stay away from them.

ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORITY

The Electronic Travel Authority is a very easy way to get your entry permit to Australia via the Internet. On arrival the immigration officer types your name into the computer and their you are. Bravo, fast and efficient. The USA should follow.

SHOPPING

In Perth most shopping activities are on and between Murray and Hay Street. There are numerous passages with small boutiques. A nice place is London Court, a small lane remembering of Tudor England. It has small shops selling products ranging from hats to opals.

Murray St.

PLEASE NOTE

GST (Goods & Service Tax) is charged. When you shop nobody really knows in the shops how GST works. They staple the credit card receipt to the invoice. Actually the CR receipt should be your verification when you get your bill at home. At the airport you get a customs approval for items which are checked in. With the carry on items you have to go to a counter after the Immigration. Here they tell you that the amount you spent on a single invoice must be bigger than AUD 300!!.

Fremantle shopping is mainly along South terrace and some side streets. Not much besides Australian made handicraft and fabrics.
