Kuantan is today the capital of the state Pahang. It is considered to be a part of the  heartland of the Malay people.  Pahang stretches from the south China Sea to the mountainous region of Genting Highlands. Settlements date back to the 1850's. the name Kuantan comes probably from a village called Kampung Kuantan in Sumatra. Today Kuantan is a fairly quiet city and tourist destination a long it's coast.

Kuantan offers a quite good choice of local shopping activities. Handicraft is plenty available. Visit a handicraft or batik factory. When your body got that tomato color from sun bathing, you might like some sightseeing.

Pandan Cave and Waterfalls The cave contains a Buddhist temple and the waterfalls are offering a cooling surrounding. You will pass oil palm and rubber plantations. >>>more
Cherating Village is located 42 km north of Kuantan. On route are fishing villages, beaches, black rocks and small factories manufacturing handicraft.
Lake Chini The trip will guide you via the Chini river through a jungle with a beautiful flora and fauna. >>>more
Kapas Island 2 1/2 hours north of Kuantan and 30 minutes boat ride brings you to the perfect surrounding for snorkeling and sun bathing.
Island Pulau Tioman You travel via Kuala Rompin from where the ferries leave for Tioman. It's a heaven for diving and snorkeling. Trips normally last 3 days.

Eating in Kuantan is a local gastronomic pleasure. Local food consists of Malay, Chinese, Indian  and Nonya cuisine and can be found throughout the city and in most restaurants and hotels. Try the banana leaf food at Nachi's and the famous dim sum at Seng Kong. The so called hawker-stalls alongside the streets are however the favorite eating places for the local people. It's good, has endless varieties and it's cheap. A fried noodle dish with a glass of fresh lime juice don't hurt your pocket more than US$ 0.80-1.00. Try dishes like laksa, roti canai, satay, nasi lemak, wide variety of noodle dishes, chicken rice.... , the list would be endless. You will find good foreign cuisine as well, like French, Italian and Japanese. Fast food like burgers are  available!!!

Popular drinks are a wide range of fresh fruit juices, cola, ice lemon tea and the famous teh tarik (hot tea) .  Anchor, Tiger and Carlsberg beer is locally brewed. You will find imported beer as well.

Kuantan's night life is fairly quiet. There are some small bars around town. Most of the "action" takes place in the bigger hotels. Night spots close between 12 and 2 a.m.
