End 1860 Kuala Lumpur was founded at the place, where the  Gombak river, previously known as the Muddy (Lumpur) River, flows into the Klang River forming a confluence (Kuala) as some prospector where looking for tin. Tin has been the life line of the Klang valley for many years. Today Kuala Lumpur, nick named KL, is the business capital of Malaysia and a cosmopolitan and thriving city with almost 2 million inhabitants. The political capital is the brand new township of Putra Jaya. Petaling Jaya a community belonging to the sultanate of Selangor is the industrial backbone and residential area of many who work in KL. The population consists of Malay, Chinese and Indians. Minor ethnic groups are the Eurasians and Portuguese.

Like most Asian cities you will find a night market, offering copy stuff to out off date clothing, China town at Petaling Street and little India are these places to go. The crowd alone makes it exiting.
Jamul Moshee is the place where Kuala Lumpur was founded.
Central Market, is worth a visit. The former central wet market of Kuala Lumpur has been transformed to an art centre with over 100 shops, 100 kiosk and 30 eating places.
The Merdeka Square (pretty new indeed) next to the Moorish Sultan Abdul Samad building (beautiful at night) represents the new identity of Malaysia. Today it is the court.
The National Museum located in the Lake Gardens area shows some of Malaysia's history. It has a library and a range of galleries. In addition there is a big collection of insects, creepy stuff.
Don't miss the Batu Caves a holy Indian cave mainly used during the Hindu Taipusam celebrations. Book a trip here.
Sunway Lagoon's is "for children below 99 years of age. It is the biggest theme park in Malaysia located outside Kuala Lumpur in Petaling Jaya (P.J.).
Make a city tour and visit South East Asia's only TV tower in K.L., Menara Kuala Lumpur 421 m tall. Have a dinner at night and enjoy the fantastic view from the revolving restaurant. The Petronas Twin Towers are among the highest buildings in the world.
If you have some more time and want to spend your night in an cooler area travel to Cameron Highlands the tea plantations of Malaysia or Genting Highlands 2000m high, (a day trip) which offers as well the only casino in Malaysia. Frazers hill is popular with mountain trekkers.
Putrajaya 25 km south od Kuala Lumpur is the new political capital of Malaysia built on a former wetland. The construction started in the 1990ies and is as well the centre for diplomatic  activities.

Eating in Kuala Lumpur is a true gastronomic pleasure. Local food consists of Malay, Chinese, Indian,  Portuguese and nonya cuisine and can be found throughout the country in most restaurants and hotels. The so called hawker-stalls alongside the streets are however the favorite eating places for the local people. It's good, has endless varieties and it's cheap. A fried noodle dish with a glass of fresh lime juice don't hurt your pocket more than US$ 0.80-1.00. Try dishes like laksa, roti canai, satay, nasi lemak, wide variety of noodle dishes, chicken rice.... , the list would be endless. You will find good foreign cuisine as well, like French, Italian, Japanese and Korean. Fast food like burgers are plenty available!!!

Popular drinks are a wide range of fresh fruit juices, cola, ice lemon tea and the famous teh tarik (hot tea) .  Anchor, Tiger and Carlsberg beer is locally brewed. You will find imported beer as well.

Kuala Lumpur has a very western style night entertainment. Pubs, bars and disco's are everywhere and enjoyed equally by locals as travelers from near and far. The city center has changed the last years as more nightspots and restaurants in hotels have been added. Sleepy lanes have been changed into vibrant streets with cozy restaurants and music bars.  Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang, Tengkat Tong Shin to mention a few. THE NIGHT LIFE is more hidden, but girls can be found in quite a few places. Ask the local guys, they know it to well.
