From being a fishing village Hong Kong became a British colony in 1842. An agreement signed in 1984 gave Hong Kong back to China  in 1997 as a special administrative region. The famous "one country two systems".

A ferry ride is a must. It's an institution and you get the finest view of the skylines. Go to the Star Ferry Terminal in Kowloon or HK Island
Stanley Market is the ultimate dealing place to get a good buy. But watch out not all is genuine and the quality is partly so so.

Take a  boat ride in Hong Kong as well as a speed boat trip to Macao.  Another former colonial enclave, but quite different from Hong Kong.

If you want a smell of China, cross the border into Shenzhen. Trains (KCR) are leaving from Hung Hom in Kowloon to Lo Wu, at the Chinese border. You need a Visa to enter China. It's obtainable at the Visa Office. It will take you 1-1,5 hour to cross the border.
   

Hong Kong's own food is mainly Cantonese Style. It is probably the most  known Chinese cuisine, full of variety in terms of ingredients. Dishes are mainly known for it's natural flavour. It is some time blend, salt pepper, sugar and soy sauce are mainly used.  Decoration is of great importance. You will find most other Chinese cuisines as well as Asian and international food. Being located at the sea, expect to get the freshest seafood available, but often not cheap.

 

Hong Kong has no genuine own drink. All international spirits, wine, beer and juices as well as soft drinks are available. some beers are brewed in Hong Kong however.

 


Pubs, bars, discos and clubs are everywhere. Girly bars are quite a few. Watch out for what you order and what you pay. The drinks for girls cost often 3 times more.
