Hamburg's
history dates back more than 800 years. It's an important seaport,
trading city and one of the richest communities in Europe today. The
Germans call it their door to the world.
Hamburgers
have nothing in common with the city. God knows where the name come
from. They neither contain ham nor do Hamburg's people view this,
there favourite food. They live buy the sea and so do there eating
habits.
The
typical citizen of Hamburg is a proud northern European, well educated,
high sense of business and trading. Many families have been linked to
the sea as it is the main port in Germany. It represents 2% of the
population and 4% of the GDP of Germany. |

A night visit to Hamburg's
"sin mile" Reeperbahn in St. Pauli is almost a most if you want to spend a
fun filled an exiting evening. Besides the famous girly bars and Herbert
Strasse you'll find a lot of pubs and cultural entertainment. |
 |
Hamburg is a true cultural
metropolis. Besides all the theatres like Thalia you'll find a range of
musicals around the city.

 |
Take a riverboat and travel Hamburg by the sea, or make a harbor trip to see
beautiful Hamburg from the water. |
 |
A nice excursion is the island of
Helgoland 2 1/2 hour by
catmaran. It's a unique island in the North
Sea. |
|
 |
Blankenese is a very
popular destination in the outskirts of Hamburg, especially during
summertime. |

You
can almost get anything you can imagine. However seafood in huge
variations are one of the main fares. Fish and seafood restaurants are
everywhere. A must is the famous fish market. Go in the evening to a
disco, stay up until 03.00 in the morning, grab a taxi and drive to the fish market.
The fishermen will display their fresh!!! catch and prepare it to your
liking or his recommendation in front of you. A typical
Bauernfrühstück
farmers breakfast might be more to your
liking. Fried potatoes with onions, eggs and bacon. The typical joints
serving this are very simple, cheap and hardly any service but portions
which served as full pan, half pan and quarter pan. The quarter is big enough
for a normal human being. Finkenwerder Scholle a whole sole with
baco (here can can prove that you know how to eat fish), Labskaus a
potato dish with marinated herring and red beet and as a desert Rote
Grütze various red berries with ice cream or vanilla sauce. Herring
is prepared in numerous variations, try some of them. |

As everywhere else in
Germany beer is high on the beverage list. Hamburg has couple of own brews,
Holsten, Astra and Duckstein. You have a few Mini breweries, the best known
are Groeninger Privatbrauerei |
|
|
|
Even
though the city has only 1.7 m inhabitants, it probable has
one of the world largest entertainment areas of any kind.
It's a part of the city called St. Pauli. Unique in it's own
way. It has it's own beer St.
Pauli Girl, it's own "girly
area", it's own football club FC. St. Pauli and
anything from cabaret to pubs, theatre
and it's own church for those who have sinned. |
