Donaueschingen, located in the Central Black Forest, has made it's name in the history books due to it's Danube Source, the Fürstenberg Palace, the Fürstenberg Brewery and the International Riding Tournament. History dates back to the 6th century, whereby in 889 it's existence was documented. 1283 is the beginning of the Count of Fürstenberg Family and the beer brewing right was given by Rudolf von Habsburg. The city name is a merger between Eschingen and Donau which means Danube one of Europe's largest rivers. Today Donaueschingen is a small town with a bustling industry.

The Black Forest got its name from the dense pinetree forest covering a good part of the region. Plenty of small towns are spread all over with either a castle or a monastery. Agriculture is widespread, try to stay in a farmhouse or enjoy a meal from a farms own products.
Schloss Fürstenberg is the center of the city with a nice garden perfect for a stroll. During the warmer period of the year the Fürstenberg brewery is having regular "Bier Garden" parties with pork knuckles and sausages.
Castle Hohenzollern in Hohenzollern is the most southern castle of the powerful Prussians. You can drive to a car park below the castle. But the last bit is solid climbing as the castle is on a hilltop. If you really don't want to walk, there is a shuttle bus as well.
Castle Sigmaringen is a sister castle to Hohenzollern and located in Sigmaringen.
The Feldberg is the highest mountain in the Black Forest. Beautiful region to track and in winter time to put on your ski's.
Freiburg close to France is a beautiful old university city. When you drive there you get a real view of the Black Forest. Mountains - Feldberg, Forest lovely farmland and picturesque  small villages.
Metzingen a good hours drive toward Stuttgart is a small town with original factory outlets of a lot brand names like Hugo Boss, Bally and Escada.
Höllenthal is a popular destination in the deep Black Forest. The main attraction is the Hexenmühle, an old water mill still producing electricity for the building. Wood carvings, original Kuk Kuk clocks and black forest ham are for sale.

Located in the Black Forest region you can expect little fish but plenty of meat. Servings are often huge and very filling.

The home of Fürstenberg Brewery gives you an obvious choice what to drink. The whole region seems to be owned by these guys. Don't worry, the "Kneipen = Pubs" do serve not only other premium beer on tab, but anything else you want. Try the so called "gesprizte" which is a mix of soda or gassy soft drink with beer, wine or some liquors. It's very refreshing in summer and it's better for your driving license. Baden has excellent wines as well and they are not expensive.

Nightlife in a little town is modest. You find a number of pubs and on weekends you have a disco as well.
