First human settlement date back to 12.500 B.C. More or less today's Denmark was united by Harold I Bluetooth  Denmark in 987. The Viking time was from approximate from 800-1100. Although the Vikings made plenty of trip to conquer places, they never remained under Danish rule for long. Denmark has been a mighty power in the past and gone through wars over the years. Denmark, Norway and Sweden was under one rule until Sweden broke away in 1523 and Norway in 1814. Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, remained part of the Danish Kingdom. In 1944 Iceland became a notion on its own. In 1940 Denmark was drawn into the 2nd world war with the occupation by Germany.

Today's Denmark is a democratic Monarchy,  with slightly more than 5.3 million people.

As Denmark is one of the oldest monarchies in the world, you'll find all the ingredients you expect from a monarchy. Plenty of castles, churches and museums to satisfy your curiosity.

Kronborg castle in Helsingør dating back to the 14th century is supposed to be where Shakespeare's Hamlet lived. It's a myth and a nice one you should visit. You can get there easily by train from Copenhagen.

When you are in Helsingør you can take a ferry to Helsingborg in Sweden.

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark is a must when you visit Denmark. Copenhagen is Scandinavia's largest city and offers plenty of shopping, sightseeing, entertainment, art and culture.

The new Öresunds Bridge gives you quick access to Malmö in southern Sweden.

Bornholm an island in the Baltic southwest of Malmö  a beautiful holiday resort with a lot of history and good food. Try their famous freshly smoked herring with salt, radish and an egg yolk.. you can reach Bornholm by sea (7 hours from Copenhagen) or air, depending on the time you have.
Drive to the north coast of xx and you will find small charming fishing

The Danish people have two main products they love more than others. Fish and pork. Most dishes do relate to these two categories. From herring in numerous variations to steamed, fried, deep fried and raw fish, crabs, prawns, mussels, caviar. Pork in a wide range of meaty dishes and cold cuts as ham, salami, bacon. The probably most famous menu is called smørrebrød. It's bread baked in various ways, buttered and topped with anything you can dream of. Some odd ones are those like bread with potatoes or chocolate or stinking cheese (your socks are delicious) and dark rum (ok). In general however they are just delicious. And what else  than beer and Akvavit goes with it. The more the better. Restaurants are generally not cheap, but the quality is good. A fast snack are the big pork sausage variations called pølse. You find them along streets, on railway stations and cost you $ 1 - 1.30. Diary products are of very high quality. Try the sour creamy milk called Ymer and served with brown sugar and dark bread crumbs.

Even though they don't have to many brands, the Danes must be among the biggest beer drinkers in the world. It's easier to find a glass of this hobs juice than coffee. Famous brands are Carlsberg, Tuborg and Faxe. Another drink is the Akvavit, contains around 43% alcohol and they promise you that it's great with anything you can chew. There is an argument who invented the Akvavit, the Danes, Swedes or Norwegians. If it matters, who knows. One thing is for sure, they all love it and plenty of it.

You will find plenty of pubs and bars serving your favorite drink. The bigger cities have as well disco's and some red light districts.
