The first settlement are100 years old. The canals and medieval streets give this nice flair. Copenhagen started as a  fishing village, became the capital of the Danish empire, and is today one of the world's premier design capitals and the largest city in Scandinavia. The majority of the people are Danish, even though Copenhagen has a very international population.

Copenhagen is a true paradise for people who like to see churches, museum, castles and other old buildings. As Denmark is one of the oldest monarchies in the world, you'll find all the ingredients you expect from a royal city.

Christiansborg Slot is one of the many Royal Castles you have in the Copenhagen Area. Its origin dating back to 1167, some of the ruins can still be seen. Today it is the home of the parliament, museums, the royal chapel and the royal library.

Amalienborg is normally the home of the Royal Family while in Copenhagen. they normally reside north of Copenhagen in Frederiksborg Castle in the town of Hillerød. Amalienborg features the Change of the Royal Guard when the Royal Family is in town.

Strøget is the longest shopping mall in Denmark. It's a pedestrian street with plenty of shopping opportunities as well as restaurants and bars.

Nyhavn dates back to 1673 and was the port and trading point for Copenhagen and the home of the famous Hans Christian Andersen. Today its a bustling entertainment and eating street starting from Kongens Nytorv down to the harbour area.

Tivoli is the famous amusement park in the heart of Copenhagen. Open from April to September, check for exact dates. On it's premises you have as well Louis Tussaud's Wax Museum.

The Öresunds Bridge connects Denmark with Sweden. Take a 20 minutes train ride via the bridge to Malmö, the most southern city of Sweden.

An hours car ride from Copenhagen you reach Roskilde. Most known for its Cathedral and the 38 Kings and Queens buried here, it does  originate from Viking days.

The Danish people have two main products they love more than others. Fish and pork. Most dishes do relate to these two categories. From herring in numerous variations to steamed, fried, deep fried and raw fish, crabs, prawns, mussels, caviar. Pork in a wide range of meaty dishes and cold cuts as ham, salami, bacon. The probably most famous menu is called smørrebrød. It's bread baked in various ways, buttered and topped with anything you can dream of. Some odd ones are those like bread with potatoes or chocolate or stinking cheese (your socks are delicious) and dark rum (ok). In general however they are just delicious. And what else  than beer and Akvavit goes with it. The more the better. Restaurants are generally not cheap, but the quality is good. A fast snack are the big pork sausage variations called pølse. You find them along streets, on railway stations and cost you $ 1 - 1.30. Diary products are of very high quality. Try the sour creamy milk called Ymer and served with brown sugar and dark bread crumbs.

Even though they don't have to many brands, the Danes must be among the biggest beer drinkers in the world. It's easier to find a glass of this hobs juice than coffee. Famous brands are Carlsberg, Tuborg and Faxe. Another drink is the Akvavit, contains around 43% alcohol and they promise you that it's great with anything you can chew. There is an argument who invented the Akvavit, the Danes, Swedes or Norwegians. If it matters, who knows. One thing is for sure, they all love it and plenty of it.

You will find plenty of pubs and bars serving your favorite drink. The  disco's are open until the morning. Red light districts are in the harbor area.

The Danes are famous for their hot dogs. They are called pølse and come in numerous variations. TRY IT.

This pølse vogn is situated on the city hall square.

Denmark has a famous drink called Akvavit. When people ask the Danes when do you drink Akvavit, the answer will be: with any fatty food except water porridge,..... but you can drink it with the porridge as well.
