The Danish people have two main products they love more than others. Fish and pork. Most dishes do relate to these two categories. From herring in numerous variations to steamed, fried, deep fried and raw fish, crabs, prawns, mussels, caviar. Pork in a wide range of meaty dishes and cold cuts as ham, salami, bacon. The probably most famous menu is called smørrebrød. It's bread baked in various ways, buttered and topped with anything you can dream of. Some odd ones are those like bread with potatoes or chocolate or stinking cheese (your socks are delicious) and dark rum (ok). In general however they are just delicious. And what else than beer and Akvavit goes with it. The more the better. Restaurants are generally not cheap, but the quality is good. A fast snack are the big pork sausage variations called pølse. You find them along streets, on railway stations and cost you $ 1 - 1.30. Diary products are of very high quality. Try the sour creamy milk called Ymer and served with brown sugar and dark bread crumbs. |

Even though they don't have to many brands, the Danes must be among the biggest beer drinkers in the world. It's easier to find a glass of this hobs juice than coffee. Famous brands are Carlsberg, Tuborg and Faxe. Another drink is the Akvavit, contains around 43% alcohol and they promise you that it's great with anything you can chew. There is an argument who invented the Akvavit, the Danes, Swedes or Norwegians. If it matters, who knows. One thing is for sure, they all love it and plenty of it. |
