Only 20 years later  the Frenchmen are replaced by Prussian  troops. In 1815  the Vienna congress gives Cologne to the Kingdom of Prussia. 1825 The first Rhine steamer takes up its course: Cologne Rotterdam Antwerp. 1880 the most characteristic building of the city: the Cologne cathedral is completed. 1917 Konrad Adenauer becomes mayor of Cologne. During his term of office the university is established again,  the stadium is opened, a green belt is created and the Cologne fair in Deutz open it's doors. 1945 Cologne is 90 per cent destroyed at end of World War II .

You can say Cologne without the Dome is not Cologne. The construction started in 1248 and finished in  1880. 1500 - 1842 no construction was done. The shrine of the three Holy Kings dating back to 1164 is the most precious and artistic reliquary of the Middle Ages

Shop until you drop on the oldest pedestrian street in Germany called Hohe Strasse, means High Street.
If you have some more time take a train to Düsseldorf with it's fantastic old town and Kö the famous shopping boulevard.

Typical Cologne food is quite roustique. Some dishes are hard to swallow like "halver Hahn" which is not half a chicken but a dry bun with a piece of old Gouda cheese, a pickled  gherkin and some mustard. A lot of the food is quiet nice with some beer and a schnapps. As a big city you will find a wide variety of different cuisines in Cologne.

The most famous beverage is beer, but not any beer. A specialty called Kölsch, top-fermented and served in a tall glas called "Stange" which means stick.. The Cologne people speak Kölsch, so they say we drink our language. Köbes is the waiter and he serves the beer from a round tray with 10 Stangen in it. Cologne has plenty of bars and breweries where you can taste it.
