Bali has plenty to offer when it comes to sightseeing, sports and shopping.
Being blessed with a beautiful nature, from the sandy beaches to the volcanic mountains it has everything you can dream of. Sightseeing, you got plenty of
tours available to take you to the most exciting places like Amlapura, the ancient royal city and the raja palace Puri Agung Karangasam. Ubud, painter village and it's nice rice fields.
The water palace Besakih, is the largest temple in Bali. The available sports activities offer you diving,
snorkeling, sailing, white water rafting, golf and tennis.
You should not miss the Barong and Kris Dance, an old
Balinese mythology with monsters and spirits.
Denpasar, the capital is just another city. Unless you have some business to do we recommend the beach areas, or a mountain hotel if you like the cooler air. The beach areas are Nusa Dua, expensive and quiet. Sanur and Benoa on the east coast qiet and nice beaches and ideal for children. No house is higher than a palm tree except an "8 storey hotel". Kuta, on the west coast is for windsurfers and night birds. It's the action area with pubs and restaurants at every corner.
Seminyak and Legian
is north of Kuta and
Tuban south, close to the airport.
In Seminyak you'll have as well the possibility to do bungee jumping. Most hotels along the west coast don't have a beach front.

Shopping comprises a lot of handicraft (good ones are expensive), art,
stonework, in Mas woodcarving (not cheap), in Celuk silver products and of course batik. Denpasar has a couple of department stores and bazaars. Wherever you go don't forget to bargain. |
 |
It's sad, but the Bali Bombing Memorial is one
the most visited place in Bali. October 12, 2002 202 people died at this place
and across the street (old Paddy's and Sari Club) |
 |
Tenganan, a small village where time has stood still.
People live like they did 100 years ago. However TV and motorbikes have
changed some of it. |
 |
The volcano Gunung Agung is the male counter part to Gunung Batur and
considered a holy mountain. The area is very wet, so take an umbrella with you
when you go there. |
 |
Tanah Lot is a temple and one of the
six national sights in Bali. Situated on a cliff an accessible at low tide
only. They are planning a bridge, what a shame. It has one of the most beautiful sun sets you can
imagine. |
 |
Bali's rice terraces are an invention in
water irrigation and a sure beauty to watch. Bali produces more rice than they
can consume. A good part of it is sold to other parts of Indonesia. |
 |
Danau Bratan is located at the lake Bratan
with a big temple complex. |
 |
Goah Gajah
is called the elephant cave. The story tells, that a prisoner in the cave did
various engravings in the wall with his nails. |

Like Indonesia in general, many dishes are quite spicy
, . The real Balinese kitchen is to be found in the numerous food stalls along the roads. Some don't look to good,
so don't eat there. Others can be pretty inviting. Indonesian food in hotels are mostly made for the tourists. Bali is called the spice islands and that with right. As the majority of the population are Hindus, pork is widely eaten. The "national dish" of Bali is
Babi Guling, Suckling pig roasted on a spit, stuffed with herbs, spices and rice.
Ayam Goreng or Ayam Bakar, fried chicken or roasted chicken.
Betutu Ayam / Bebek, chicken or duck smoked in an earth oven.
Gado Gado, boiled and fresh vegetables laced together with peanut sauce. Lawar, thinly chopped papaya, jackfruit, green beans, grated coconut, starfruit leaves and spices. This dish can be served with a variety of meats, such as chicken, duck or pork. Mie Goreng, fried noodles with chicken, beef, pork, prawn crackers , vegetables and fried egg. Nasi Goreng, fried rice with chicken, beef, pork, prawn crackers , vegetables and fried egg. Padang Food, spicy
,
food from Sumatra, 12 or more dishes are brought to your table with a choice of beef, prawns, vegetables, eggs, three type of chicken, offal, even soup and chili. The good thing is you only pay for what you eat!!! Rujak, a spicy
, sweet fruit salad. Sate - Beef,
lamb, pork or chicken kebabs served with a peanut sauce, cucumber and onions. |

Bali Moon is a local
liqueurs distiller . They are very popular in a wide range of delicious
tropical cocktails. Bintang beer is Indonesia's own brand. Bali Hai

cheap. |

Nightlife starts quite late. Most people start their night partying
around midnight. In the Kuta and Seminyak area you will find plenty of activities.
From normal pubs to theme pubs like Reggie, homo joints and disco's.
Most Bars and Pubs close at 3 a.m. If you are still not tired check out Santa
Fee and Double Six (66). There is no shortage of kupu kupu malams, they will probably ask you for some "pocket money", Rp 150.000 and up.
NOTE, drugsellers are quite
common, please don't buy. Years of jail or death sentence!! It's not worth it. |
