In a way the Austrians have a lot in common with the Germans. The breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Freshly baked bread (it's almost a religion) plenty of cold cuts, ham and cheese. In addition fried eggs and bacon, it last you a whole day.

In general Austrian food is a very hearty fair. Portions are big and a lot of meat. Try the "Goulash" it comes as a soup or a main course with potatoes. It's a beef stew type dish. Pan-fried dishes are very popular. the ingredients do vary, but in most cases you will find pork, ham, bacon, cheese, mushrooms. Don't be surprised they put the whole pan in front of you. if you can't finish it don't worry , your neighbor has the same problem. Fish is often a pan fried filets of "chefs choice" or a local river trout. pasta is very  popular, Italy is south of the border.

The Austrians are known for their cakes, Sacher, Strudel to mention two of the famous ones and deserts with names only god knows what they mean. Don't worry they are delicious and have plenty of natural calories.

Being squeezed between two dominant neighbors Germany in the north (known for their beer)  and Italy in the south (known for their wine) the Austrian have found their own distinctive style. Austria has some good wine. Their white Cabernet Sauvignons are among the best in the world, but they don't come cheap. Gösser is Austria's most famous beer.
